Scammers targeting the elderly

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Scammers will target just about anyone. Those who usually fall victim are the elderly. According to Jonesboro police reports, an 86-year-old woman claims she's given out over $15,000 over the past two months.

On February 12th the women received a letter claiming she had won a new car and 5.5 million dollars. After calling the number given in the letter, she spoke to a man under the name David Golden. Golden requested she send $400 to a specific address and that her winnings would be delivered. A few days later Golden called again, asking her to send another $400. In the past two months Golden has managed to get over $15,000 from the woman through several checks, and one of them as much as $6,500.

"These people that master this game of deception, they figure out a way to weave into their vulnerabilities and befriend them," said Banker Jay Knudston. "Along the way they create these terrible tragedies and it's very sad to me."

Officers are asking that family, friends and neighbors look out for the elderly, to make sure a loved one isn't the next victim.

"You don't have the ability to trust anyone anymore," said Knudtson. "You don't have the ability to take somebody at their word over the telephone or in the mail because these guys are good and their scum, but they're good at what they are doing."

Police later found that the woman suffers from Alzheimer's and Dementia.
