Ober Throws Complete-Game Shutout; CofC Downs Citadel 8-0
CHARLESTON, SC -
Freshman Bailey Ober continued his torrid start to the season, pitching a complete-game shutout in an 8-0 win over The Citadel (7-9). The win gave the Cougars (12-3) their fourth-straight series win and first victory on the road this season.
Ober (4-0) became the first CAA pitcher to win four games this season, while joining only 23 other pitchers in the nation to record four wins at this point. He allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters with no walks in a dominant performance. Ober faced just 30 batters, only three over the minimum, as the Cougar defense turned one double play and caught a runner stealing.
Dating back to Feb. 19 against Charleston Southern, Ober has not allowed a run in 18 consecutive innings. For the season, he has a 1.00 ERA with 26 strikeouts and no walks for a WHIP of 0.55.
The Cougar offense did everything that it needed to in providing support for its freshman stud pitcher. CofC scored four runs in the first three innings, before adding four insurance runs in the eighth and ninth stanzas.
Brandon Glazer closed out a solid series with two hits and an RBI. He finished the weekend with a .467 average and six RBIs. Carl Wise went 3-for-5 with his second triple of the weekend, scoring one run and driving in two more.
Gunnar Heidt tallied two hits and reached base three times to score three runs, while Brandon Murray knocked an RBI double and scored two runs while walking twice.
Mason Davis and Drew DeKerlegand were the only Bulldog batters to tally hits in the game.
The Cougars jumped all over Citadel starter Kevin Connell (0-3) in the first inning, loading the bases after RBI singles from Wise and Glazer. Pappas was the seventh batter of the inning but he grounded into a double play to get the Bulldogs out of the jam.
CofC turned on the heat again in the third with another single from Heidt and an RBI triple from Wise. Alex Pastorius knocked an RBI single to score Wise and the Cougars held an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
The Cougars won't rest as they host Jacksonville tomorrow night at Patriots Point before hosting Kent State, Michigan and Appalachian State in a tournament this weekend.
