MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Thousands of people are headed to Memphis for the inaugural American Athletic Conference basketball tournament. During their time here, they will be pumping millions of dollars into the city's economy.
The tournament will take place at FedExForum beginning Wednesday and running through Saturday. It is music to the ears of Beale Street merchants.
"We're expecting it to be almost as good as Music Fest weekend, which is a pretty good weekend for us," said Dennis Flanagan, Silky O'Sullivan's Pub.
"This is a conference tournament we haven't experienced in a long time," said Kevin Kane, Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Kane estimates about 15,000 out-of-town guests will travel to Memphis for the tournament, bringing in $15 million to the economy.
Downtown hotels are nearly sold out.
"Louisville will show up en masse," said Kane. "Their fan base traditionally is really good for the Memphis economy."
"First we gotta put our best foot forward so these people come back some other time," added Flanagan.
The tournament title game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday.
