COVINGTON, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A building at Covington Village Apartments was destroyed by fire over the weekend. Now, residents are wondering where they will go and whether they can afford it.
Action News 5's Justin Hanson was there and captured cell phone video of the fire. He also watched as Dorothy Robinson ran to the scene where her cat was trapped inside her burning apartment.
"The only thing I was concerned about was my cat, anything that was in the apartment could be replaced, but she was my baby," said Robinson.
Firefighters rescued her cat, but were not able to salvage many of her belongings. Robinson has just a few family photos left.
"Lost. Stressed out. Don't know where to go or where to turn or what to do," she said. "I'm not getting any help whatsoever from the management at Covington Village.
The Red Cross helped the displaced residents by putting them up in a hotel for two nights. They were also each given $160 for food and clothing, but that assistance has since stopped.
The residents say the apartments' management is not helping, but managers beg to differ. They say they are doing everything they can to work with the displaced tenants.
The apartment managers plan to hand out vouchers that will allow affected residents to move into other apartments in Covington and surrounding areas.
But some, including Robinson, are not interested in paying more in rent and having to move.
"They wanted to put me in an apartment for $385 per month, a two bedroom and pay $385, which I can't afford on a fixed income," said Robinson.
Management promises to credit the accounts of those who lost everything. The special state vouchers should be in at the end of the week and the seven families who lost their apartments should have new places to stay very soon.
