(WMC-TV) - A Shelby County Schools district official predicts hundreds of positions will be cut from the 2014-2015 budget. At the same time, the school district expects thousands of teachers to apply for work in the newly formed municipal school districts.

Superintendent Dorsey Hopson says there will be $227 million less to work with next year.

Hopson referred to possible job cuts last week when discussing the 2014-2015 budget during a media briefing.

There will be a grand total of 4,700 fewer positions, but they say that number is not as bad as it sounds.

Hopson says the district will lose 33 schools and nearly 35,000 students with the creation of the municipal districts in the fall. Many positions will no longer be needed in SCS.

Municipal districts will likely hire 3,000 positions.

Wednesday SCS officials confirmed an estimated 800 cuts may come from the remaining positions. Three-hundred of those could be bus drivers since the district is looking to outsource transportation. Another 200 could come from the central office.

Officials say to expect 250 teacher positions on top of that, most of which will be through retirement or resignation.

"There will be ample opportunity for people to secure employment, but between the teachers positions we don't have the final number yet," said Hopson.

Officials maintain every year SCS hires teachers through excess.

The district's 2014-2015 general fund revenue is expected to decline 19.1 percent. None of these numbers will be finalized until the budget is finalized in the coming months.
