Grizz hearts decorate lawns in Binghampton for a good cause

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A local teenager is combining his love of the Memphis Grizzlies and art to help out in his community.

What started out as a project to brighten up the neighborhood surrounding the Carpenter Art Garden turned into a fundraiser to make it better.

Donte Davis' grandfather helps to run the Carpenter Art Garden. A few weeks ago, they were putting the finishing touches on dozens of wooden hearts, decorated in support of the Grizzlies, that now decorate neighborhood lawns.

Lois Bruce, who volunteers at the garden, helped to paint the hearts. Each one was sold for $20. The money raised will fund the Purple House Project, which is being built next door to offer year round indoor activities to kids, like tutoring and art projects.

"The house has been torn down, the ground has been cleared, making way for the new structure that's gonna go up there," said Bruce.

"If it be too hot or too cold. We go in the purple house and do our activities," added Donte. "I can do a small part."

A small part that can make a huge impact for years to come.

Donte says he already took 40 orders for the Grizz hearts, but he is still taking them to raise money for that purple house.
