BRIGHTON, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The curtain will rise for students at one Mid-South High School after school leaders told them a spring musical was canceled.

"He said, 'Great news ...The show is back on.' Then hooting and hollering," said cast member Ally Wallace.

Brighton High students rehearsing the musical "Hairspray" since December received that news from their teacher Thursday afternoon. The 30 students found out this week the curtain might not rise on the popular musical.

The principal of Brighton said the first-year teacher never had approval for students to do "Hairspray." She did not know anything about it.

Principal Christi Huffman said when she did find out about a month ago, she asked the teacher to get her a copy of the play with objectionable parts removed.

"I cannot remember the last time we performed a play, so it's new to Brighton High. It's new to this community," said Huffman.

But it is not new to the Tipton Fine Arts Council and The Ruffin Theater, who have come to the rescue in its mission to bring more arts to the schools.

"We heard about the situation as a board. We voted we would just take over the play and do it as a regular Ruffin production," said Frank Deslauriers with the Tipton Fine Arts Council.

Since there is no stage at Brighton High the plan was for the students to perform "Hairspray" at the Ruffin. The performance will likely have a six-night run instead of the three that were initially planned.

Huffman says she will meet with parents Monday about the extended performances. Hairspray is scheduled to open at the Ruffin April 11.
