BBB issues consumer alert on ABC Waste

(WMC-TV) – Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South issued a consumer alert about ABC Waste Friday morning.

ABC Waste services parts of Memphis and West Tennessee. Action News 5 has done several stories with customers whose trash sat for weeks without being picked up.

"ABC Waste's actions have shown that they don't operate with the level of trust and ethics that consumers and BBB expects from businesses," said Randy Hutchinson, CEO of Mid-South BBB serving the Mid-South.

BBB says it is concerned about the number of complaints it has received on ABC Waste. The company has had an F rating since June 2013, which is when BBB revoked its accreditation due to failing to "respond to complaints."

BBB received 48 complaints from people in West Tennessee; 45 complaints have been filed since January 2014.

"Its frustrating ... My mothers trash, we still have Christmas trash out here," said resident Michael Brown.

ABC Waste says it has spoken to the BBB and believes it has corrected its problems.

"I understand. If you're paying for service, and you don't get it you're, going to be upset," said Joe Elliott with ABC Waste.

The company says it returned to regular collection schedules as of Thursday, and it is offering affected customers two weeks to a month's worth of free service.

"We had some issues: some truck issues, some equipment issues, and some employment, some drivers. Everything's done been replaced," said Elliott. "We've got everything back up to power to the regular schedules now and everything should be back to where it was."

ABC Waste says all excess trash will be collected, and that everything should be gone by the end of next week.
