CORDOVA, TN (WMC-TV) – Washington, D.C.'s Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception announced St. Benedict at Auburndale High School is one of five recipients of its Charity & Social Service Honor.

Sharon Masterson, SBA's communications director, said the school won the honor for a student-produced video of how SBA contributes to local community and charitable efforts.

"The list is lengthy, but to name a few: leading the high school canned food collection of for the Mid-South Food Bank each year, meeting the goals of Lifeblood drives and marching in Washington each year at the annual March for Life, including leading it in 2001 and co-leading it last year," said Masterson. "Other contributions include contributing to Birthright and Life Choices Pregnancy centers, Habitat for Humanity, Biking for Babies, Catholic Charities, St. Jude Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Make-a-Wish, Ave Maria Home, St. Mary's Soup Kitchen, Haiti Medical Missions of Memphis, Special Olympics and the Mayor's Memphis Faith in Action Clean-Up project.

"The school rallies – from the students to the teachers and parents – in helping those less fortunate or in special need."

SBA senior Chris Schuhlein of Germantown, TN, will represent the school at the National Shrine's ceremonies March 29.

Janet Donato, superintendent of Memphis Catholic Schools, thanked Schuhlein and SBA's student body for their service to the school and to the community.
