AAC Tournament draws thousands to downtown Memphis

(WMC-TV) - It is a big night for basketball in the Mid-South. Thousands of fans are in downtown Memphis for this year's AAC tournament.

Between the St. Patrick's day parade and basketball, it's big day here in downtown Memphis. While this will be a difficult story to watch for Tiger fans, just know it means positive things for the city.

From FedEx Forum to Beale Street, downtown Memphis is invaded by Cardinal red and white.

"To the Tigers fans, the third season starts tomorrow night. That's the important thing the third season," said Tigers fan Charles Rayfield. "We wanna support the city and the basketball tournament and the people of Memphis should come to all the games like I did."

But not all locals were sporting blue. Some were wearing the "wrong" colors.

"Louisville wins the AAC, moves on plays Memphis in the NCAA and we win national one more time. Sweet repeat," said Memphian Louisville fan, Terry Bishop.

Louisville in the AAC tournament finals is dream scenario for city officials. A large fan base that travels well, staying one more night, pumping more cash into the local economy and perhaps making plans to visit again.

Action News 5 saw a fair share of Tiger blue here Saturday afternoon. Sunday is the big day for Tiger fans, when in just about 24 hours or so, Memphis will learn its fate for the NCAA tournament.
