Forward Wayne Simpson scored the game-winning goal 1:42 into overtime to give the South Carolina Stingrays (36-19-2-3) an 3-2 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators (24-32-3-2) at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday evening. The Stingrays finished the head-to-head series against the Gladiators with a 9-6-0-0 record.
Gladiators forward Brenden Walker opened the scoring 2:50 into the contest capitalizing off a turnover and lifting a shot over the glove of Stingrays goaltender Allen York (W, 29 saves on 31 shots) from the right-wing circle. Less than a minute later, the Stingrays responded with a tally from forward Nick Larson deflecting a shot from leading scorer Peter Boyd past netminder Josh Unice (OTL, 23 saves on 26 shots) at 3:17. Forward Jack Downing added the second assist. Forward Paul Rodriguez put the Stingrays up 2-1 on the power play at 7:07 with help from defensemen Dylan King and Joe Lavin.
In the second period, Gladiators forward Kurtis Bartliff slipped shot between the legs of York at 6:17 to even up the game. After a scoreless final frame, Boyd slid the puck over to defenseman Derrick Pallis who found Simpson on top of the crease to backhand in the final marker. The Stingrays finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play while the Gladiators went 0-for-2.
The Stingrays close a three-game in three-day weekend tomorrow, Sunday, March 16 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 3:00 p.m. at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.
