(WMC-TV) - Similarly to the buses that arrive like clockwork to their morning stops, more than 300 Shelby County School District drivers know the inevitable will soon arrive.

Longtime driver Debbie Decrow and her coworkers filled a few chairs during the district's first in a series of community meetings regarding the proposed budget.

"And even though we may be bus drivers, those kids learn something from us," she said. "Sometimes those children never get a hug, or a smile, or have a good day."

Decrow said she had nothing to lose by being the sole public speaker.

The district's current bus operation will be completely outsourced next year. Private companies will carry students to and from school like they have done in Memphis for years.

"They offer less in salary, there are no benefits, no retirement ... Everything we've worked for all these years," said Decrow.

Bus drivers are among the hundreds of SCS employees facing lay-offs as municipal school districts form in six suburbs.

In the central officer the district eliminated 151 positions, according to a SCS official.

"We're faced with a budget that says here are the dollars, here are the numbers, where should they best be spent? And I have one responsibility: Keeping as many dollars as possible closest to the classroom," said SCS board chairman Kevin Woods.

Municipal districts have already heard from many SCS teachers who plan to transfer. It is unclear whether bus drivers and others will be able to do the same.
