One killed in double shooting at townhome complex

(WMC-TV) – Investigators say two people were shot in the 4100 block of Woodbranch Court near East Raines Road, east of Interstate 55. Police say one person shot died on the scene.

Shot were heard a little after midnight Tuesday at Sterling Townhomes in Whitehaven and brought concerned residents into the parking lot area.

When investigators arrived on the scene, they found two men with gunshot wounds.

Early reports are that a 26-year-old woman and the 28-year-old man were approached by another man, who was armed with a handgun. The armed man attempted to rob the couple and then the two men began fighting, police say.

During the struggle, the woman was able to grab the would-be robber's gun and fired several shots. Both men ended up getting hit by the gunfire, according to police.

The woman remained on the scene. The would-be robber died and the other man was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to non-critical condition.

No charges have been filed in this case.
