MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Not getting along. That is one of the main things Memphis City Council focused on at its meeting Tuesday. The 13 council members say they could not be more different. With that, they spent most of Tuesday morning laying those differences and feelings on the table.

Communication facilitator Shelley Baur coached Memphis City Council members Tuesday on how best to communicate with one another and the mayor's office. Because they all come from different backgrounds, members say the city council does not fit a cookie cutter mold. One of its biggest complaints was a lack of communication and inconsistency from Memphis Mayor A C Wharton's office to the city's governing body.

"We need a better working relationship because this ship has gone amuck," said Joe Brown, Memphis City Council. "It's not being navigated properly and I'm not projecting the blame on one or the other, but at the same time, we've got to come to some unity and consensus about the welfare of the citizens of this city."

Memphis City Councilwoman Wanda Halbert added, "No, we're definitely not consistent across the board and I think the administration oftentimes sends mixed messages because they will allow council members to dig into the finances and budget and support a huge massive project in their district, but then other council members ask simple questions and they're not necessarily receptive to that."

Council members say it is all about being honest, transparent, and trustworthy with one another, the mayor's office, and the citizens of Memphis.

The council and mayor's office are expected to have another communication session soon to iron out their differences.
