MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Drivers are not only facing long lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Hickory Ridge Mall. There is now a theft investigation underway, too.

An employee is accused of putting license reinstatement fee money into her own pocket.

Constance Slater was a driver's license examiner at the DMV. Now, she is locked up on theft charges. She is accused by state troopers of altering license reinstatement fee transactions and pocketing $75 from each one.

According to an affidavit of complaint, Slater did it more than 20 times since September 2013, pocketing more than $1,000.

In a written statement, Department of Safety Commissioner Bill Gibbons said, "We take any allegation of criminal activity by our employees very seriously. Anyone who is suspected of stealing from the state will be swiftly investigated and held accountable."

Investigators say Slater resigned Monday. At last check, she was still in jail on a $10,000 bond. She is due in court Wednesday.
