(WMC-TV) - Orpheum leaders celebrated a $14.5 million center for performing arts and education Tuesday.

"It's kind of ironic. In 1975 they were thinking about tearing down the Orpheum to make a parking lot," said president Patrick Halloran. "And today [Tuesday] we are taking a parking lot and we're putting up a building for the performing arts."

The Orpheum Centre for Performing Arts and Education hopes to help grow some Mid-South talent. The center will not only mean more space, but it will mean more educational opportunities for students as well.

"We start the curriculum with kids at preschool 3,4, and 5 up to college," said Halloran.

More than 80,000 students from Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas will benefit.

"They're gonna learn to trust each other we've already seen it this programs 15 years old we just needed more space," said Halloran.
