MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The Memphis Chamber of Commerce is kicking off a new initiative in an effort to create 1,000 entrepreneurs in 10 years.

The goal is straightforward, but it is how it will be accomplished that is expected to make the difference.

To reach its goal, the Chamber of Commerce created another organization called the "EPIcenter." The EPIcenter is a play where people who have an idea can go to turn it into a business, which in turn, could create jobs.

Through the EPIcenter, the entrepreneurs will get mentoring, networking, and financial support by Memphis business men and women who are in support of the effort.

"You are looking at starting a company. You are going to look to where do you go? And what we want to do is bring that energy," said Memphis Bioworks President Steve Bares.

"Those are the batteries of the community. Let's bring those batteries and give them a way to do it."

The effort hopes to create around 4,500 new jobs and have a $600 million economic impact.

To drive the point home, Waddell and Associates' David S. Waddell brought up two other southern cities people often use to describe Memphis' potential.

"You can look at Austin and Nashville that have a thriving entrepreneurial culture and those communities just exude creativity and optimism," said Waddell.

The EPIcenter is expected to be running and producing entrepreneurs in August of this year.
