Sam Cooper traffic continues to plague drivers

MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - It was a tough weekend for drivers who use Sam Cooper Boulevard. A long term construction project became a nightmare for drivers on Saturday, when traffic slowed to a trickle.

Sunday traffic along Sam Cooper Boulevard proved to be less hectic than it was on Saturday. Even still, drivers who spoke with Action News 5 say trips that used to take a few minutes are now taking longer because of the construction.

"When you're coming back going east off Sam Cooper on this side of 240, it's a little rough," said Derek Lehman.

The construction along Sam Cooper is all a part of a widening project. After it is completed, there will be two additional flyovers and six lanes on Sam Cooper.

Drivers say construction has made it tough to get through this area quickly, and it is even tougher where there is an accident.

"I was coming back from work and there was an accident and I was stuck and I was already past Perkins so I had no choice but to sit there," added Lehman.

Some drivers say they are trying to avoid Sam Cooper as much as possible, but even that is becoming challenging.

"Yeah that is definitely a factor. We we do we try to avoid it but everybody else is trying to avoid it at the same time so it becomes a big problem," said Brant Holt.

The payoff many hope will be a smooth new roadway, much faster than the old Sam Cooper and with more lanes.

The construction to improve Sam Cooper is expected to last 18 months. You can track traffic at wmctv.com, and in the mornings with Janeen Gordon on Action News 5.
