(WMC-TV) - Kids and parents in DeSoto County are still not sure when school will start in 2014-2015, since a new bill was just signed into law.

This week, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed Senate Bill 2571, which allows each public school district in the state to determine its own start date.

DeSoto County Schools were tentatively scheduled to start August 18, but now that date could be moved up by as many as 10 days.

Many families are trying to plan summer vacations.

"We've been waiting for a decision for a while so we can make summer plans and know when we're going to start back," said Amy Chatham, who is a DeSoto County Schools parent.

Superintendent Milton Kuykendall told WMC Action News 5 he is going to let teachers pick between two proposed schedules. Kuykendall will then take that recommendation to the school board for a final vote.

If teachers vote to start sooner, students will get out of school earlier next summer.

"People didn't think about all the effects it will have, like your seniors couldn't start their college, your teachers couldn't work on advanced degrees," explained Kuykendall.

Most parents see both the pros and cons to an earlier start date. They are just ready for a decision so they can plan their summer.

The school district hopes to inform parents about the decision after an April 8 meeting.
