Forward Peter Boyd scored all three goals to guide the South Carolina Stingrays (39-21-2-4) over the Fort Wayne Komets (31-23-7-5) 3-2 on Stanley Cup Night at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday evening.
The Komets kicked off the scoring 7:51 into the contest with a tally from defenseman Jace Coyle. Boyd tied the contest late in the frame beating former Stingrays goaltender Max Strang (OTL, 27 saves on 30 shots) at 17:21. Forward Dale Mitchell and defenseman Steve Spinell added assists. With five seconds to play in the period, Komets forward Aaron Clarke reclaimed the lead putting a shorthanded tally past Stingrays netminder Allen York (W, 24 saves on 26 shots).
Early in the third period, Boyd buried the tying tally with help from Mitchell and rookie Stephan Vigier 34 seconds in. In overtime, Boyd completed the hat trick at the 34-second mark with his team-leading 25 goal and 63 point of the season. Newcomer Kevin Ryanearned the lone assist. Both teams finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play.
The Stingrays kickoff a five-game road trip tomorrow, Sunday, March 30 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 3:00 p.m. at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena and celebrate Fan Appreciation Night and The Post and Courier Hall of Fame Night on Friday, April 11 against the Elmira Jackals at the Coliseum.
