Clarksdale shootings kill 1, injure 5, including child

(WMC-TV) – Clarksdale, Miss. police are searching for the people responsible for several shootings on Sunday. One person was killed and five people, including a child, were injured in the series of shootings.

Sunday morning around 10 a.m., police found Rico Butler, 36, had been shot several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene in the 100 block of Adams Avenue. A second man was hit in the arm by gunfire. According to police, the victim was sitting inside Butler's vehicle when he was shot. The man was taken to the hospital.

Sources tell WMC Action News 5 that Butler was a high ranking member of an active gang, but police are not confirming that information.

Four other people were shot in subsequent shootings in the city later Sunday evening. It is unclear if the crimes are related.

Just before 11 p.m. Sunday, a shooting was reported in the 700 block of Catalpa Street. A man was shot one time in the foot. He was treated at the hospital.

Around 11:15 p.m., police were called to a shooting in the 600 block of Ritchie Street. Police found two men had been shot outside of an apartment complex.

A 7-year-old boy found inside an apartment at the complex was also shot once. Police say the apartment where the child was does not appear to be the intended target. All three victims were treated at the hospital with what police say appear to be non life-threatening injuries.

There are no suspects in custody and Clarksdale police are following up on several leads. They are asking that anyone with information about these shootings to call Clarksdale Police Department at 662-621-8151 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
