TUNICA COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Testimony is underway in the trial of the accused Mississippi highway killer charged with murdering two people. James Willie is charged in connection to Lori Ann Carswell's death in Tunica County.

In court Tuesday, WMC Action News 5 learned that Lori Ann left work at a nearby casino alone. She made one stop at a gas station before she was found dead. Her car was running, with lights flashing, next to her body, which was found lying in the highway.

"I just wish I could have been there to help protect her," said her father, James Carswell. "Just the kind of person that would stop on the highway or small road and get out and help a turtle."

Willie was seen in court looking at his family members, including his brother Jonathan, who believes deputies have the wrong guy.

"They just got a gun and a body and trying to put it on him, so I just want him to have a fair trial," he said.

Investigators testified a 9 millimeter handgun was found in the car of Willie's girlfriend. A shell casing at the scene was the same caliber.

Willies' brother offered condolences to the heartbroken family.

"I feel sorry for them, you know. I just want them to get the right person," he said.

Carswell feels prosecutors do have the right person. He hopes the jury feels the same after all the facts come out.

"He took my daughter with no mercy, and I show him no mercy, and it may not be the way everybody thinks, but I hope the state of Mississippi shows him no mercy," said Carswell.

Also, Willie is accused of killing Thomas Schlender of Nebraska, who was found shot in his car in the median of Interstate 55 in Panola County, Miss. near Pope.
