Gov. Bryant signs Religious Freedom Restoration Act

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Governor Phil Bryant has signed Senate Bill 2681, the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act.  This law mirrors the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act that passed Congress almost unanimously and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993.

"I am proud to sign the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act today, which will protect the individual religious freedom of Mississippians of all faiths from government interference," said Gov. Bryant.  "Mississippi has now joined 18 other states to defend religious freedoms on a state level."

An early version of the Mississippi bill, considered weeks ago, was similar to one Arizona's Republican governor, Jan Brewer, vetoed after business groups said it could hurt that state's economy.

Supporters say the final Mississippi bill bears little resemblance to the failed Arizona measure.
But opponents say they still worry a law could prompt people to cite religious beliefs in discriminating against others.

Another part of the new law adds "In God We Trust" to the state seal but the change won't come immediately.

All state agencies will continue to use stationery and other supplies having the current seal until they run out.

Buildings and any other items  that contain the current seal affixed to them must keep it until replacement due to normal wear or until replacement with nonpublic funds.
