Several women off Memphis streets after prostitution sweep

(WMC-TV) - Several woman are off Memphis streets thanks to a prostitution sweep across the city.

Prostitution operations are conducted often in Memphis, and likely in cities everywhere, but it is still disheartening for residents to hear that this type of business is going on right in their neighborhood.

At least five women ranging in ages from 26 to 52 were arrested on Friday night and charged with prostitution near a church or school. Tamara Sisson, Lisa Prejean, Zenekia Taylor, Christina Hickey, and Patti Newkirk were each approached by a an undercover officer who acted as a decoy. Some of the women were offering sex for as little $15.

Tremika Pirtle is a mother of three who lives in the Tillman area where one of the operations were conducted. She does not feel that police focus enough time on sex crimes.

"They are actually worried about more traffic tickets than what is going on in this neighborhood," said Pirtle. "They burn the streets up and ride corner to corner and they stop the wrong people for the wrong things when it's other stuff that's going on out here right in front of them that they shouldn't be doing."

First Baptist Broad Church was mentioned in two of the arrest affidavits as being within a mile and a half from these prostitution operations. Several other churches and Brewster Elementary are near the Tillman and Summer area.
