MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A new grocer is opening in the Bluff City to meet a critical need for Memphians who are trapped in a 'food desert' and don't have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Memphis has plenty of fast food establishments, many of them located in struggling neighborhoods. But the nearest grocery store to some people in South Memphis is more than two miles away.

The Grocer at the South Memphis Farmers Market opens Tuesday and plans to provide a healthier alternative to fried foods.

In 2013, the market only operated one day a week, but beginning Tuesday the market is expanding to a permanent facility. It will run six days a week and will support 40 full-time jobs.

The expansion is the result of collaboration between a community development corporation called The Works Incorporated and more than 1,000 area residents.

The newly expanded South Memphis Farmer's Market will be open Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. The market is located at 1400 Mississippi Boulevard.

Tuesday's grand opening starts at 10 a.m. and the market will be open until 7 p.m.

The new and improved food facility will be a big help to the area, especially for people lacking transportation.
