MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A bar and grill will open in Beale Street Landing when the project has its grand opening June 27-28.
The Riverfront Development Corporation (RDC) operates Beale Street Landing. At the quarterly RDC Board of Directors meeting Tuesday morning, the board recommended RDC operate a bar and grill at Beale Street Landing, at least for its first season through winter.
The project has been a lightning rod in the city, but now RDC says it can finally announce for certain what will occupy the empty space.
The kitchen, bar, dining area, and patio space are ready. Now, Beale Street Landing's restaurant space finally has a tenant, at least, for now.
"It's very positive for our city, it's very positive for the venue," said RDC Vice President Dorchelle Spence. "We think once you have the restaurant in place, when people come down to Beale Street Landing, it answers the questions of what do you do here."
After a year of speaking with between 20 and 30 different restaurateurs, some considering the space and some offering advice, RDC decided to open and operate its own restaurant for the first year Beale Street Landing is open.
"We can figure out how to mitigate the conflicts, how to exploit the potential, how to earn revenue, how to bring people down to the site," said Spence. "I think it's a really good compromise for the first year."
Spence says consultants and designers are still working out specific details, but the general concept is already set.
"It'll be contemporary feel. It'll be comfortable feel. It's not white tablecloth. It's a bar and grill. Everybody knows what that feels like," she explained. "Let's go have a drink. Let's go have some iced tea. The kids can be in an area. The adults can have a good time. It's something for everybody."
The restaurant is expected to open with Beale Street Landing's grand opening on June 27.
