(WMC-TV) - A federal grand jury and the State of Tennessee indicted more than three dozen members of a long-running drug ring that reportedly distributed illegal, large amounts of Dilaudid and other prescription pills, such as Oxycodone.

Fifteen people arrested face federal indictments. Many of the 23 people indicted on state drug-related charges are family members whose operation has been in business for more than 15 years, said District Attorney Amy Weirich on Tuesday.

During "Operation Whitehaven Dilaudid Family" officers seized 10 vehicles, $53,807 in cash, 111 Dilaudid pills, and 154 grams of powder cocaine. More than 200 individuals from the Memphis Police Department and Shelby County Sheriff's Office assisted in Tuesday's early morning takedown that led to the arrests.

The abuse of prescription pain pills such as Dilaudid, also known as Hydromorphone, destroys lives daily in Tennessee, according to the DA.

"Almost 100 percent of heroin deaths are individuals who began their addictions with pain pills," said Weirich

Most of the charges—carrying up to 25 years in prison without parole—involve high-level felonies with enhanced punishment because they involve drug trafficking in school zones. Charges also include money laundering.
