DESOTO COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Construction on Interstate 269 is about halfway done, but the project's price tag is about $100 million more than expected.

After the massive construction project is completed, I-269 will connect I-55 with Tenn. route 385 and Interstate 40 eventually.

"I drive by every day, they're working on it. I don't know how long," said Marshall County Resident Patrick Watermeier.

Transportation leaders say the project is about halfway done. This week WMC Action News 5 learned the cost might be as much as $100 million more than originally planned. People in Marshall County say they have seen the construction for months.

This week DeSoto County leaders voted to approve bonds to avoid hitting a snag in the project. If construction costs more money, will it come out of your county tax dollars? DeSoto County Supervisor Harvey Lee says no.

"We had to do a joint agreement with [Mississippi Department of Transportation], so they could get the rest of the money from the federal highway department to help them pay for that," said Lee.

Original estimates put a $275 million price tag on the new interstate. Now up to $375 million can be used if it is needed. People hope they see the benefits soon.

"It's going to make travel faster and more convenient when it gets done," said Watermeier.

People should not expect to start driving on I-269 until sometime in 2017.
