(WMC-TV) - The Coahoma County, Miss. man who woke up on the side of a gravel road after his mobile home blew away during severe storms last week has died.

According to John Hess' daughter, he passed away Tuesday night.

"He's the strongest man I know," said Jennifer Brockway, who did not expect to have to say goodbye to her father. "We thought he was making it through all that. He could survive anything."

Following the storms in the early morning hours of Friday, April 4, Hess' mattress was in the middle of a field along with almost everything else that was in his home. There were no trees in the area to block the nearly 60 mile per hour winds.

After waking up alongside the gravel road, Hess' family said he crawled to a tractor and was able to drive down to a friend's house.

Brockway says her father lost his fight at Regional One Medical Center. He leaves behind several children and grandchildren.

"He did everything right in his life," said Brockway. "I hope that my kids can grow up and be half the man that he was."

A funeral service will be held for John Hess at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Wynne, Ark. A visitation will be held Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kernoble Funeral Home in Wynne.
