MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – University of Memphis has the lowest crime rate of the 10 largest public and private universities in Tennessee, according Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's recent campus crime report.

This is the fifth time in the past seven years the U of M has had this designation.

"It's very important on a university campus for teachers and for everyone involved to instill a value of safety," said Rebekah McFerran, who is a senior at University of Memphis.

University of Memphis Deputy Director of Police Services Derek Myers counts on Internet-based security cameras to keep students and staffers safe.

There are more than 600 Internet-based cameras all over campus, including downtown at the law school.

School officials say the cameras, along with Tiger Text Alerts, are the reasons the university has the lowest crime rate of the 10 largest public and private universities in Tenn.

"We're able to go back, look at footage, and if something occurred, we can usually determine what happened and who's responsible," said University of Memphis Police Chief Bruce Harbor.

The TBI report is based on campuses with more than 5,000 students.

"I don't have a car, so I ride the blue line bus, so there's always campus security and staff around to protect," said sophomore Lakeria Price.

Campus police say the U of M campus has 35 full-time officers, while the Lambuth campus in Jackson, Tenn. has five full-time officers keeping people safe.
