MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Days after making it into the WWE Hall of Fame, the Ultimate Warrior passed away. The man born as Jim Hellwig, more commonly known as the Ultimate Warrior, died at the age of 54.

Some Mid-South wrestling fans may even remember the Ultimate Warrior's wrestling debut in Memphis. His debut was inside the old wrestling studio at WMC Action News 5 with commentators Dave Brown and Lance Russell.

Hellwig was part of the wrestling duo, the Freedom Fighters, for a short time in the late 1980s. The other member of the duo was Steve Borden, more commonly known as Sting.

Hellwig began his professional wrestling career in Memphis in 1985. He quickly became famous for his intricate face-paint, bulging muscles, and dramatic flair for sprinting to the ring and shaking the ropes before his matches.

In 1993, Hellwig legally changed his name to Ultimate Warrior.

"I am the Ultimate Warrior. You are the Ultimate Warrior fans and the spirit of the Ultimate Warrior will run forever," he said in a video online.

After a decorated career and an 18 year absence from the ring, Ultimate Warrior was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on Monday night in New Orleans.

During his acceptance speech, he chose almost a prophetic use of words.

"Every mans heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe its final breath and what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others and make them believe in something larger than life," he said.

It was not two days later when Ultimate Warrior collapsed during a walk with his wife, Dana, outside of their hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. He leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

A police report says he died from a quote "sudden and catastrophic medical condition."
