(WMC-TV) - Some people marry multiple wives and claim religion, but one Mid-South wife says that is not always the case.

"I didn't do it out of spite, because I'm not like that. I did it to teach him a lesson," said Carlena Hammons.

Hammons did not realize her husband was married to another woman, but when she found out, she got police involved.

Kenneth McIntyre, 34, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with bigamy after court documents showed he was married to two women at the same time.

Hammons says they married in Montgomery County, Tennessee on July 30, 2010. On July 6, 2013, McIntyre married Nikia Bell in Shelby Country while he was still legally married to Hammons.

Hammons says she does not speak to McIntyre anymore, but she cannot do anything until proper paperwork is filed.

"I feel like my life is at standstill, and it can't go anywhere until ... I can't move on. I can't move on into another relationship, because I've got this man right here that I'm married to," said Hammons. "Him wanting to move on with his life without finishing what he started before."

Bigamy is a class A misdemeanor in Tennessee. McIntyre could face up jail time and a $2,500 fine.
