(WMC-TV) - A controversial cemetery could be coming to Raleigh, and neighbors are saying not in my backyard.

Chris Metcalf and some of his neighbors in one Raleigh neighborhood do not want a potter's field near their homes. Someone put a flyer on his door saying, "Your front yard is about to become a Pauper's Graveyard."

There are plans to put a second Shelby County cemetery where the poor are buried on land at the northeast corner of Raleigh-Millington and Duncan roads. Right now the land is primarily wooded.

"The property value around here is down. I think it will only drag it down even farther," said neighbor Chris Metcalf.

Some residents worry about crime increasing. Some worry about flooding after the land is cleared.

LeeAnn Roman lives right next to the land, but she is not concerned about a cemetery and even says it could be an improvement.

"There would be a barrier between our house and the property and the cemetery," she said.

The current Shelby County Cemetery on Ellis Road is running out of room and that is why a second one is needed. Shelby County Public Works Director Tom Needham says the flooding issue has been investigated.

"We've checked that with the engineering calculations, and the runoff of the flat lands is the same for the wooded area as it is for a grassy area," said Needham.

Needham says property values should not be affected pointing to the current potter's field that sits between upscale neighborhoods.
