(WMC-TV) - Some young students are getting a lesson outside of the classroom and in the fresh air. They are learning how to feed themselves and their community all on their own.

Dandelions are in full bloom in the garden at Green Leaf Learning Farm, but there are more than just flowers.

"When it's warm the kids will come out here. We'll play games, do science lessons, and sometimes we'll just do art projects all related to the gardening experience," said project coordinator Jessica Gossett.

Marlon Foster started the farm as part of Knowledge Quest in 2010. Their focus: education, food access and security, as well as community income development.

"It really gets down to food security ... We [Memphis] are ranked number one in a lot of the wrong areas, food desert is one," said founder Marlon Foster. "We [the garden] need volunteers."

The food goes back into the community feeding those in need. Some of it is used in cooking classes for the students where they learn healthy ways to prepare foods.

The rest goes to farmers markets.

"What Green Leaf proper sits on now was formerly eight vacant dilapidated houses and vacant lots that were overgrown," said Foster.

Garden keeper Walter Gates found his passion teaching the children what he knows about agriculture. He says if you want to connect with something good then you should come by.

"Once you come out here you'll get caught with this dirt, and it's hard to get off of you really," said Gates.

Green Leaf is a USDA certified organic farm and opens on Thursdays. To learn more follow the link: http://somefm.org/green-leaf-learning-farm/.
