SHELBY COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Early voting in Shelby County's primary election begins in less than one week. Democrats hoping to unseat Mayor Mark Luttrell met for another debate on Thursday.

The three democratic candidates—Rev. Kenneth Whalum Jr., current county commissioner Steve Mulroy, former commissioner Deidre Malone—must get past the primary before taking on the sitting republican.

Mulroy and Malone agreed with aspects of city-county consolidation, which was among the topics covered.

"You know, if you have leaders who are interested in working together, you can find efficiencies," said Malone.

"I think we should look at fire department services, law enforcement, certainly code enforcement," said Mulroy.

Whalum also floated an ambitious plan to utilize soon-to-be-closed neighborhood schools.

"Put county employees in those buildings, thereby preserving the life of the community," he said.

While the democratic candidates debated, incumbent mayor Mark Luttrell held a campaign meet and greet.

Perennial candidate Ernest Lunati is running against Luttrell in the primary. That is on May 6.
