(WMC-TV) - Memphis police officers responded to a shooting at Beale Street and November 6th Street around 1:55 a.m. Saturday morning. When they arrived, officers say they found a 26-year-old man had been shot multiple times by a 25-year-old off-duty Pontotoc sheriff's deputy.

The shooting victim was taken by ambulance to Regional One Medical Center in critical condition. The off-duty deputy was not transported for injuries sustained.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the 26-year-old victim fondled a woman and got into a verbal altercation with the off-duty deputy, which escalated into a physical altercation. During the fight, two other people joined in the attack. That is when police say the deputy fired shots, striking the victim.

The deputy was taken into custody without incident.

The Attorney General's Office declined to prosecute the off-duty deputy at this time. The investigation is ongoing and charges may be forthcoming.
