Blue Prevails Over Garnet In SC State's Annual Spring Game 21-15

Posted: Updated:
ORANGEBURG, SC - The South Carolina State offense showed improvement Saturday in a 21-15 win over the defense in the annual Garnet & Blue spring football game at Oliver. C. Dawson Stadium.

The Bulldog offense jumped out early on a 45-yard bomb from quarterback TeDarrius Wiley to Dennis Rowe early on in the first quarter. The biggest impact on the day was the return of Jalen "Scoot" Simmons who sat out last season due to a shoulder injury.

Simmons exploded on a 43-yard touchdown run his only rush of the game to give the offense their second score of the day. Quarterback Joseph Copeland's 22-yard toss to tight end Tammarick Hemmingway closed out the offense scoring drives.

Quarterback Adrian Kollock had an impressive day in the air connecting on 16-of-24 for 210 yards, Joey Copeland was 9-of-15 for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Wiley finished the day 6-of-10 for 79 yards and a touchdown. The defense accumulated its points after stopping drives by the offense – one point for any stop and two points for turning the offense away on a 3-and out.

Running back Dondre Lewis-Freeman led the way with eight carries for 46-yards and Simmons finished with 43-yards and a touchdown, while Justin Taylor added five carries for 27 yards.  Rowe had a monster day catching the ball with six catches for 129 yards and a touchdown and wide receiver Taquan West caught seven passes for 61 yards, respectively.

Also leading the way with receptions were Temarrick Hemmingway (42-yards and a TD) and Brandon King (37-yards) with four receptions each on the day.

The defense was spearheaded by linebacker Tevin Richard with five tackles. While defensive back Joshua King, Greg Newell, linebacker Isaac Francis and defensive back Dominique Mitchell each posted four wins in the loss.

SC State will play a 12-game schedule in 2014. The Bulldogs open the campaign on Aug. 30 when Pough's team battle intrastate rival Benedict College in the Palmetto Capital City Classic in Columbia.
