MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Staffers from Tenn. Senator Lamar Alexander's office began a unique tour of Shelby County Pre-K classrooms on Monday. They are working to gather facts and see firsthand the impact of cuts recently made to the Pre-K program budgets across the country.

The 4 and 5 year olds at Ridgeway Early Learning Center are being taught through a collaborative between Shelby County Schools and several other entities. They are earning high marks for academic success.

Recent budget cuts, however, have made funding those types of programs a nightmare.

Staffers from Senator Lamar Alexander's office toured the preschool to learn more about the impact those cuts are having.

"I think the senator is of the feeling that early learning programs are important, and we just need to make sure that we are using those programs to best serve children," said Patrick Murray, Senator Lamar Alexander's office.

What Sen. Alexander's staffers learn at Ridgeway Early Learning Center could become ammunition for future proposals in order to funnel more funds into Pre-K. That idea is something staffers and school leaders say would be a good investment.

"If you've got a solid foundation through a quality preschool program, then you shouldn't have any problems with academic success," said Principal Divalyn Gordon, Ridgeway Early Learning Center.
