College of Charleston junior infielder Gunnar Heidt and freshman pitcher Bailey Ober won CAA Weekly Awards, the conference office announced Monday.
Heidt was selected as the CAA Player of the Week and Ober won CAA Co-Pitcher of the Week. It marked the second consecutive week that the Cougars have won two CAA weekly awards.
A native of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Heidt batted .611 (11-18) with three doubles, five runs scored and five RBIs in CofC’s 3-1 week, which included a three-game sweep of CAA foe Delaware. He had three hits in three of the four games, including a 3-for-3 effort in the Cougars’ 6-2 win over UD on Friday and a 3-for-5 effort with three RBIs in Sunday’s 8-3 victory. Heidt, who also walked three times and stole two bases, is batting a league-best .514 in CAA play this season. He currently leads all CofC hitters with a .346 average.
Hailing from Huntersville, N.C., Ober went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances last week, giving up only four hits and an unearned run over 10 innings. The freshman allowed just three hits and an unearned run in 8.0 innings of work as the Cougars beat Delaware 12-1 on Saturday. He also allowed only one hit over two shutout innings of relief against USC Upstate. He had six strikeouts over the two games. Saturday’s game marked Ober’s team-best fifth quality start of the season, and third time that he’s pitched at least eight full innings in a start.
Heidt’s Player of the Week award was his first this season in the new conference. Ober has now won three Pitcher of the Week awards and one Rookie of the Week award, more than any other CAA player. The Cougars have won eight weekly awards in 2014, the most among all schools in the CAA.
After starting the season at 7-2 in conference play, the Cougars are currently in first place with a half-game lead on William & Mary.
