MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Some Midtown residents were forced out of their homes Friday morning when natural gas started leaking into their neighborhood.

One of them is especially grateful for firefighters who went the extra mile to make sure no one got hurt.

Memphis Fire Department was called to the scene of a gas main break in the 1500 block of Carr Avenue, near South Willett Street. Eight homes were evacuated around 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

WMC Action News 5 crews spoke with Jessica Van Eyck, who lives across the street from the gas main break. Her dog was still in the home when she was notified of the evacuation order.

"Well there's construction going on right across the street, they're renovating a house so I think the construction crew busted a main gas line," said VanEyck. "The firefighters went ahead and went in for me and got her out ... I didn't expect waking up this morning my dog to be rescued by two firefighters."

No one was hurt and residents were allowed to return to their homes within an hour.
