GERMANTOWN, TN -

(WMC) - Some Mid-South parents are on alert: A stranger is driving through their neighborhood asking children for personal information.

Listening to parents on Monday evening, they say an unidentified man has been making appearances off and on over the last few years. But so far, police say he has not broken any laws.

Germantown police and school officials are on the alert after reports of a suspicious man stopping Dogwood Elementary school students walking to and from school, asking them personal questions.

Parents like Sandy Rhea are concerned.

"Had some story about he had a sick cat or needed some yard work or was going out of town, but the kids said 'No I'm not gonna give you that information' and got scared went to a neighbor," said Rhea.

Police say the man approached several students asking for their parents' phone numbers. When the children told the man they did not know the numbers, he drove away.

"I live so close to the school, but I mean I can't even let my kids or I don't let them go to the park by themselves. It's just a different day and time," added Rhea.

Germantown police say the students describe him as a man with white hair and a white beard, driving a red vehicle.

"I think with our Facebook page and everything that we have we're a pretty strong neighborhood around here. Everybody's keeping an eye out for each other," noted Ali Shoemaker.

This is not the first time the stranger has been spotted in the area. Rhea says she and other parents watched him giving away candy to children after school months ago. She is making sure her children are aware of their surroundings.

"I just try to prepare them, teach them about talking to strangers and things that can happen."

Unfortunately, the children could not provide any other information such as a tag number for investigators. Officers will continue to monitor the area.
