(WMC) - Back when growl towels were still white, fans packed into FedExForum this week on April 23, 2011 to cheer on the Memphis Grizzlies. As towels waved across the arena, the team won their first home playoff game by defeating the top seeded San Antonio Spurs.

The grindhouse roared after their team, an eighth seed, won the game 91-88. That victory led to another moment in franchise history: the Grizz secured their first series, four games to two.

"It was an incredible performance in the third and fourth quarter," former Coach Lionel Hollins told the Associated Press after the Grizz's first home Western Conference Playoff win. "We outscored them 30-15 and from the second quarter on, our defense just kept getting better and better."

Although the Grizzlies fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder, who moved onto the Western Conference Semifinals that year, the Bluff City's team hit many milestones during the 2011 playoffs, the first time in five years they made it into the post-season.

For one, the nation started to associate "grit and grind" with the Memphis Grizzlies. As this was a way to describe the disruptive defense and inside-out offense, the term also started to reflect the personality of the city. A city that fought for a NBA team only 10 years earlier.

"When Tony Allen said, 'Grit and Grind', we all that live here know what that means, because we do that every day," said Gayle Rose, who is part of the NBA pursuit team.

A group of hoop dreamers, including Rose, came together in an effort to bring a NBA team to Memphis. But in 2001, the $250 million NBA financing package did not settle well among taxpayers and elected officials.

For a while, the idea of pro-ball tore the city apart, but after a successful "NBA Now" campaign the Pyramid, and later FedExForum housed the history-making basketball team — which, as all Memphians know, made it to the Western Conference Finals for the first time last year.

Now, Grizzlies fans wait for Thursday's home playoff game against the Thunder. The Grizzlies tied the series 1-1 Monday after a 111-105 overtime win in Oklahoma City.
