MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - At least one person was killed in an apartment fire that happened around 6:30 a.m. on the 4400 block of Powell Avenue in Memphis on Tuesday.

The fire woke up neighbors, several of whom knocked on doors in an attempt to wake others in nearby apartments.

"I live about 200 to 300 feet from where the fire was and it was bad. The air was heavy and so was the smoke," said Ron Lendowski.

"I was up and I heard glass breaking and screaming," added the Waring Park Apartments property manager, Ronnie Moore.

Fire crews were able to knock out the fire minutes after arriving on the scene. But it was too late. A man renting a downstairs apartment was found dead.

"He was roughly the age of 60," said Moore. "Works for the city."

Investigators say the man's body was found in his kitchen.

"We're not ruling anything out," said Lt. Wayne Cooke, Memphis Fire Department. "Our investigators are conducting a comprehensive investigation to determine the actual cause of it."

A fire department spokesperson says it is not clear whether foul play was a factor in the man's death.

Property managers are working to find other apartments for the people who were displaced by the fire.
