TIPTON COUNTY, TN -

(WMC) - RATS! People in one Mid-South neighborhood say they are fed up with the vermin scattering through their streets, scurrying across their properties, and infesting their communities.

They say the problem got exponentially worse over the past week, after the arrest of a neighbor. Calling the health department and pest control have provided no relief to the problem that will give you the heebie-jeebies.

"Our neighbor here, he's had a problem for a long time," said Nick McDivitt, who lives on Meadowview Drive.

When Thomas David Corner was arrested and accused of assaulting a Tipton County sheriff's deputy, investigators say they found 10 abused dogs living in filth and feces. Animal control seized the dogs, but neighbors believe now that their food supply is gone, the rats are scattering in search of something to eat.

WMC Action News 5's Nick Kenney found a garbage can filled with 19 rats. Neighbors say that is just a small fraction of the number they killed since the dogs have been gone.

"My fiance shot 15 just in a couple of hours the other night," said Rhena Leone, who worries neighborhood children and her own health. "It's a concern for me because I have an immune issue and it makes a big problem and a concern for me."

McDivitt wants to see the neighborhood quarantined or cleaned up.

Corner is being evaluated due to erratic behavior. He is due in court on June 3.
