MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - A 17-year-old who escaped from a court van and then captured went before a judge on Wednesday.

Earnest Wilson was on the run for several hours before he was caught. He was led into his arraignment wearing the same kind of handcuffs and shackles he was wearing when he escaped on Monday.

According to investigators, the 17-year old was being returned to court from a scheduled doctors appointment when he suddenly bolted from a juvenile court detention van that was stopped at a traffic light at Bellevue Boulevard and Jackson Avenue.

Detention officers chased him, but the teenager got away. Officers searched on a North Memphis neighborhood they thought the teen was hiding in.

Several hours would pass before officers found Wilson just off of Chelsea Avenue near Friendship Church of God and Christ. He was still wearing the handcuffs and shackles he escaped in.

In addition to the escape charges, Wilson was also charged with theft under $500.

Prosecutors say the theft charges stems from the fact that when Wilson escaped, he took the handcuffs and shackles with him. The teenager was already facing charges for a carjacking back in March and that is how he ended up in juvenile court.
