Benton's Shaffer signs with NSU

NATCHITOCHES, LA (NSU Sports Information) -

Demon baseball head coach Lane Burroughs and the Northwestern State coaching staff announced that Benton standout Jordan Shaffer signed to the 2015 Demon baseball team.

The right-handed pitcher and infielder is a four-time all-district honoree in baseball, and two-time all-district honoree in football.  The Benton native lettered four seasons in baseball and football, and one season in basketball.

"Jordan is a tremendous athlete.  He is a legitimate dual threat," said Burroughs.  "He is a multi-sport guy that has a real level of competitive drive and determination to be the best."

Shaffer, who is in his senior season, holds a .426 average at the plate.  He has 41 runs along with 24 runs batted in, and three home runs, three triples and 11 doubles.  On the mound, he has a 5-2 record with a 1.39 earned run average and 63 strikeouts.

As a junior he was 8-2 on the hill with a 1.70 ERA and 73 strikeouts.  The incoming freshman hit .422 from the plate and had a .500 on-base percentage.  Was named all-district and all-parish Most Valuable Player along with first team all-city and all-state.

He led Benton to back-to-back district championships, including an undefeated district record in 2013.

"His makeup is off the charts.  He has a seriousness and quiet confidence about him that will help him succeed at Northwestern State and well beyond," said Burroughs.

Shaffer has thrown two no-hitters in his career, and is a two-time athlete of the week.

He threw for 2,500 yards and 30 touchdowns as the quarterback for Benton.  He earned All-State Academic honors in both football and baseball.  He is the Valedictorian of his class, a member of the National Honor Society and earned the President's Award.

"Jordan has a 4.0 (grade point average), and his success off the field is just as important as on the field, said Burroughs. "Our program has a history of success in the classroom, and he will help us continue that tradition.

"We are thrilled to have Jordan join the baseball family and are looking for great things from him on and off the field," he said.

Shaffer is the son of Denny and Bridgette Shaffer, and has one sister, Braylin.  He plans to major in biology, and wants to go to dental school to become and orthodontist or oral surgeon.
