Lincoln County students return to school after storms

Posted: Updated:

After a week of devastation, the people of Lincoln County are trying to regain a sense of normalcy. Students will return to school for the first time since the deadly tornadoes that claimed two lives, leveled homes, and ripped off the roof and front of South Lincoln Elementary School.

"It's very traumatic for everybody involved, especially the little ones," said David Golden, principal of Flintville Elementary School.

Students who attended South Lincoln Elementary will be sent to nearby Flintville Elementary on Monday, operating on a split schedule. The students and staff will share the building at least for the next few weeks, according to the Lincoln County Public School District's website.

"We just want to make sure that they know when they come into Flintville Elementary that they're going to be loved, and they are going to be cared for," Golden said.

The staff held an open house on Friday afternoon to welcome parents and students into their new temporary school.

"We want to make the kids seem as calm when they come back," said John Fanning, the principal of South Lincoln Elementary School. "Therefore, they can see familiar faces, they can see where their room is so when they come back on Monday, they can feel comfortable in getting back into the school setting."

All across town, loads of supplies have been donated to volunteer groups like the Hands of Mercy Outreach Center.

"We're still in need of mops and brooms, yard rakes, things like that to help in the cleanup effort," said Tina Hudson, president of Hands of Mercy Outreach Center.

They've received items like bottled water, toothpaste and soap, the most basic needs for people who have lost everything. "We just want to be here to help in the community in any way that we can," Hudson said.

Director of schools Dr. Wanda Shelton said on the school district's website, "SLES is going to be fixed as good as new on that site and will reopen in the fall."

Students will take End of Course and TCAP tests this week as well. Details about testing and transportation schedules can be found on the school district's website:
