(WMC) - A Memphis man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after he plead guilty to killing his mother back in 2012.

His family is torn over the mental illness he says made him do it.

"I picked up my hatchet and went in and I killed her."

William Patrick Walsh killed his mother Elaine with a hatchet to the head April 21, 2012.

"I loved her very much."

Walsh says he heard voices and thought his mom was poisoning his food to try to kill him.

John Kevin Walsh, now a widower after 31 years of marriage, asked for leniency on his son.

"I lost my best friend, my wife, to a very tragic situation," said John. "I believe Elaine, as do I, would want the best for him. I want the best for him."

Elaine was one of six children. The surviving siblings are split on their wishes, though two testified they want justice.

"What would Elaine want? I think she would've wanted not to take a blow with a hatchet 12 times to the face," said Elaine's brother Jack Mayer.

Walsh has been locked up in jail for two years and is on medication for depression and schizophrenia. He says he feels better now and knows he must take his medication for the rest of his life, especially when he gets out of prison in 2032.

"I apologize to all those I've hurt," said Walsh

Walsh has no possibility for parole and gets credit for time served thus far. He will be 42 when he is released.
