MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC) - Part of the Highland Strip is gone after a massive fire Sunday. Investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the fire.

Signatures Custom Apparel and The Peddler Bike Shop storage building are now rubble on South Highland Street.

Firefighters used a backhoe to collapse the building, which was too dangerous to stand in, after an inferno ripped through two businesses. The blaze started in Signatures and spread to Peddler.

"We're in the process of taking inventory of what was in the damage," said Cort Percer, The Peddler Bike Shop.

The bike shop's showroom, located two doors down, was not damaged, but the shop employees are contacting customer's whose bicycles were ruined.

"It's kind of devastating," added Percer.

An agent with United States Environment Services spent several hours on the site, concerned if the fire burned toxic chemicals into the air.

Meanwhile, unknowing Signatures customers were perplexed.

"I was on my way to pick up some jerseys for our softball team we ordered last week.  Was looking for 559 [Highland] and walked by," said team member Brent DePriest.

Everyone involved was more worried about three injured firefighters than their own property.

The fire department has not determined how or where the fire started and the three firefighters had minor injuries.

If you have any concerns about exposure, call the regional office of Environmental Services at 662-280-3232.
