MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC) - A neighborhood is on high alert Monday night after a woman was raped in the area and her attacker got away.

The victim's injuries were so severe that she was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Following the attack, people in the neighborhood where it happened are concerned for their own safety.

Residents are uneasy after a 34-year-old woman was raped in the area.

Crump Station police officers were called to the scene after a report of a woman's screams coming from the woods just after 4 a.m. Saturday near the 1300 block of Willie Mitchell Boulevard and Olive Street. They found the woman had been sexually assaulted and was unable to speak due to the injuries she received in the attack.

"Surprised, especially around here, everybody sticks together around here," said Ladondra Kelly.

Police say an unidentified man was spotted in the area of the assault, but he got away from officers who chased him.

The woman was immediately transported to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition, where she is in stable as of Monday night.

Neighbors say everyone knows one another like family.

"My heart reach out to any victim of that male or female," said Kennedy Fitzpatrick.

The suspect is described as a young man, approximately 5 feet and 10 inches tall with a slim build, wearing all dark clothing.
